News From Croatia
There's always something happening at the Canadian Embassy in Zagreb:

On September 11, the Canadian Embassy sponsored the 6th annual Terry Fox Run in Zagreb. Last year, the run raised 250,000 kuna for the Klaiceva Children's Hospital in Zagreb. The run is a well- established and popular event in Zagreb that provides the Canadian Embassy an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Visit the site at www.terryfoxrun-hr.org for more details on this year's event.

From September 11-25th, a Croatian civil engineer from the Institute gradevinara hrvatske (IGH) visited Canada to learn about Canadian building technology. Scheduled stops on the visit included the National Research Council in Ottawa as well as manufacturing firms in Montreal, Winnipeg and Toronto. IGH is an important player in the Croatian and Bosnia-Hercegovinian construction markets. As such, the goal of the trip is to educate the Croatian construction industry about Canadian technologies--translating into more business for Canadians. The visit was organized through the Chamber by the Canadian Embassy in Zagreb. For more information on the IGH, visit www.igh.hr.

Ambassador Beck and International Trade Canada commissioner Bill Macheras met with Chamber board members in Toronto on September 20. Ambassador Beck discussed the plan for a proposed meeting in Toronto between Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic and the mayor of Toronto, David Miller. Amoung the topics discussed by the trade commissioner included the promotion of exchanges and subsidies available for international relations students in Canada and Croatia. The ambassador also indicated that the embassy was continuing to work on streamlining and simplifying the visa process through the Canadian Embassy in Zagreb.
