Canadian Amabassador, Trade Commissoner Meet with Chamber

On February 15, 2005, Canada's ambassador to Croatia visited the Chamber with a message from Zagreb: the Canadian government is ready and able to help Canadians investing in Croatia.

Accompanying Ambassador Stephanie Beck was Trade Commissioner Annie Lirette from Ottawa. Ms. Lirette is responsible for business development with Croatia.

Ambassador Beck requested to meet with the Chamber to learn more about its mandate, priorities, members and members' interests. Attending the meeting were both Chamber board members and other Croatian-Canadian businesspeople.

The meeting agenda included a discussion on existing trade barriers between Canada and Croatia and sources of funding for Canadian companies who want to do business overseas. It also focused on ways the embassy can provide assistance to better facilitate the work of the Chamber.

At the meeting, the Chamber also brought up an issue that is of primary concern for the Croatian community in general. Croatian-Canadians feel unfairly treated by the requirement that all Croatian men between the ages of 18-65 years must complete a military questionnaire before being granted a visa to visit Canada.

In response to the Chamber's concerns, Ambassador Beck noted that she has already put in a request that the form to be re-worded. While this step is welcome, the Chamber informed the ambassador that it will continue to lobby the Canadian government to abolish this policy in its entirety.
